History

In present-day Municipality of Shumen is situated in the central part of Northeastern Bulgaria in area of 640 sq.m. It was founded 3200 years ago. During ancient times the city was cradle on the rich spirit and significant culture – Thracians, Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians.
The ancient civilization in the Bulgarian lands is usually associated with the culture of the Thracians. In its centuries long history that people, ‘the second greatest in the world after the Indians’ in Herodotus’s words, had not created any culture in a written form. Near Shumen are also discovered Thracian tombs and monuments. The finds reveal the fact that the Thracians had lived on this land for many centuries in the remote past and had left rich material and cultural heritage. Clues from prehistorical period are found in caves near Shumen, in villages Madara, Salmanovo, Kodzadermen, near the countryside holiday apartments in Bulgaria and others. Settlement hills, where we found out about ancient man and his life, are formed down many ages from decaying houses and waste products. Their houses were rectangular, built from wooden stakes interwove with rods and filled up with clay. People lived then (6th - 4th Millennium BC) used tools made from stone, flint, bone and copper . They also made magnificent objects from clay , decorated with graphical pictures and colored  with red and white paint. They sculptured  figures from bone, marble or clay used to please gods. These tribes used to know the gold too. In hill near Shumen were found gold earrings. They made adornments, bangles and rings from bones, clay, stone and mussels which consist that they were trading with other people probably from Mediterranean and Black sea. We also know that tribes lived here had a connection with Tripolie (today Romania, South-west Russia and Ukraine). Since hoary antiquity the lands around it had been a field where dynamic events took place. As a result the modern town is a centre of a rich and varied cultural - historical inheritance. A great part of it consists of unique monuments which have high scientific and artistic value.  There are two different stories regarding the name of the city Shumen. The first is that the name descends from the name of Tsar Simeon Veliki: Simeon – Shimeonis – Shumen. The second is that it descends from shuma, or foliage – a greatly timbered place with many forests. From its finding until the 15th century, the city was situated in the region of the Shumen fortress which explains the well-made complex of public and culture buildings near the holiday apartments in Bulgaria. Until the 15th century, the city was located around the Shumen Fortress, a sophisticated complex of defensive installations, religious and civil buildings. Shumen was a thriving economic and cultural center during the period of the Bulgarian National Revival in the 19th century. In 1882 the Shumen Brewery, one of the first breweries in Bulgaria, was founded.
On May, 22, 1813 the town witnessed the first public celebration of the day of the saintly brothers Cyril and Methodius and the first theatrical performance.
In 1828 the first girls’ monastery school was founded and in 1856 the first girls’ class school and the first community centre were founded.
In 1846 the first amateur school ensembles were founded.
The first Bulgarian symphony orchestra was also founded in Shumen in 1850.
