Arkhangelsk Oblast
Arkhangelsk Oblast (Russian: Арха́нгельская о́бласть, Arkhangelskaya oblast) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). It includes Franz Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya island, and also Nenets Autonomous Okrug. Its governor is Nikolay Kiselyov.
Arkhangelsk Oblast has the area of 587,400 km² (including Nenetsia) and a population of 1,336,539 (2002 Census).
Arkhangelsk is the administrative center of the region, with population of 356,051 (2002 Census). Historically, the chief centers were Kholmogory, Kargopol, and Solvychegodsk. One can find medieval wooden chapels and the Antoniev Siysky Monastery lost in impassable woods. The Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea are a World Heritage Site. Severodvinsk is a primary shipyard for the Russian Navy. Plesetsk Cosmodrome is one of two spaceports within the Russian borders (second, Svobodny, is located in Amur Oblast).
