Oruzgan

Oruzgan (or Uruzgan) is one of the thirty-four provinces of Afghanistan. It is in the centre of the country. Its capital is Tarin Kowt. On March 28, 2004, the new Daikondi province was carved out of an area in the north. The map shows the new provincial boundaries.

Taliban leader Mullah Omar was born in Singesar village, in Oruzgan province, not far from Kandahar.

Virtually no international aid agencies have a permanent presence in Oruzgan. The US military operates a Provincial Reconstruction Team out of Tarin Kowt.

The province is governed by Jan Mohammed, a warlord ally of US forces there. He has recently survived several attempts on his life, as Taliban/insurgent activity has increased there in mid 2005.

A Dutch peacekeeping force will be operating in Oruzgan starting in August 2006 under the umbrella of NATO. A first military group, the Deployment Task Force, has been sent out on March 14, 2006.
